You've probably heard of the five stages of grief. But breakup grief doesn't follow a neat checklist.
The Stages (Not in Order)
Denial: "Maybe they just need space." "This can't be real." "We'll probably get back together."
Anger: "How could they do this?" "They wasted my time." "I hate them."
Bargaining: "If only I had..." "Maybe if I change they'll come back." "What if I had done things differently?"
Depression: The deep sadness. The weight. The "what's the point?" feeling.
Acceptance: "It's over." Not happy about it, but no longer fighting reality.
The Real Truth
You won't move through these in order. You might be in acceptance on Monday and back in denial by Thursday. You might experience multiple stages in a single hour.
This is normal. Grief is messy. There's no right way to do it.
What Helps
- • Name what stage you're in. "Oh, this is bargaining."
- • Know that feeling something doesn't mean you're stuck there
- • Let each wave pass through you
- • Get support during the hardest stages
